Multi-Mode vs Single-Mode Fiber
There are essentially two type of Fiber Optic Cabling. Multi-Mode Fiber(MMF) and Single-Mode Fiber(SMF). Multi-Mode Fiber is typically limited to short fiber connections and Single-Mode Fiber is use for longer reach requirements. There is a single laser path for SMF applications. With MMF, there are multiple paths that light will take to reach the end of the fiber. This less efficient route thought fiber contributes to the limited reach of MMF Transceivers.
